UEE Medium Voltage Cable Coupler System

ELECTRICAL RATING

Coupler ratings at sea-level only: operating ratings must take into account cable capacity and altitude.

Current: 250, 400, or 600 Amperes
Voltage: 8,000 Volts

Unit Electrical Engineering Ltd. manufactures a range of medium voltage portable power cable couplers rated up to 8,000 Volts AC and up to 600 Amperes.

The Mining Industry and the Use of Cable Coupler Systems

In mining operations, surface or underground, trailing cable/connector systems are typically used to supply power to moveable equipment. Where high voltage and large fluctuating currents are used throughout the mine site, safety, economics, and reliability are a priority.

Safety is very important while handling power cables and the couplers that connect them. The UEE system is designed under CAN/CSA M421 by incorporating a pilot pin arrangement that opens first and makes last and a ground connection that opens last and makes first. This ensures that the supply circuit breaker is not operated until the phase contacts make and the body of the coupler is connected to ground.

UEE couplers require minimal insertion effort for a complete connection or disconnection to be made. A quick, eye-bolt locking system provides a secure and watertight seal. These features, along with others, make the UEE Couplers convenient to use by providing maximum flexibility, thus reducing downtime and improving overall economics.

Reliability of this system was achieved by basing design features on experience with field cable repair. Potential features and benefits were identified and incorporated into the coupler design.

FEATURES & BENEFITS APPLICATION

  • Quality, sand-casted aluminum body makes the coupler durable and light .
  • No exposed phase conductors in the bell cover eliminates the need for cavity filling.
  • Stainless steel bolts ensure reliable disassembly.
  • Forged, stainless steel eyebolts provide a "no failure" bolting arrangement.
  • O-ring joints and modified rubber gaskets make the coupler assembly entirely weather proof.
  • One piece high strength insulator is formed from technologically advanced plastics to provide the best electrical and flame extinguishing properties.
  • Arrangement of main phases separated by a continuous ground shield ensures that potential faults are phase-to-ground not phase-to-phase, so the possibility of damaging high energy failures is reduced.
  • Silver-plated, copper pin and socket assemblies are designed for optimum current and heat transfer properties with low insertion resistance.
  • Positive and secure cable/connector connections eliminate the need for soldering.
  • Pilot pin connector assembly ensures a secure, low-resistance path through the coupler.
  • Optional extended body provides additional space to accommodate larger cables.
  • Optional Kirk-key interlock on female receptacle provides mechanical lock-out and isolation.
